GRIEF AFTER SUICIDE: What Clinicians Need to Know


Presented by: John R. Jordan, Ph.D., FT.  Dr. Jordan, nationally recognized expert and author, is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Wellesley, MA and Pawtucket, RI, and, until 2007, was the founder and director of the Family Loss Project, a research and clinical practice providing services for bereaved families and specializing in working with loss and bereavement. For more than 30 years, Dr. Jordan has specialized in working with survivors of suicide and other losses.


Workshop Summary:
This workshop will provide a focused overview of the impact of suicide on survivors, and the general clinical and support responses that are needed after a suicide occurs. The workshop will include didactic presentation, video, group discussion, case examples from the presenter’s practice and will draw upon Dr. Jordan’s recently released volume: Grief After Suicide (Routledge, 2011). Topics include:

  • A brief review of the epidemiology and contributing factors involved in most suicides
  • Common themes in the bereavement of survivors
  • Risk factors for complicated grief after suicide
  • Principles of immediate postvention after a suicide
  • Support options and implications for longer term clinical work with survivors

Cancellation Policy for CEU Training Programs:
JSSA does not refund registration fees for CEU training program cancellations. However, a credit can be issued if JSSA receives a registrant’s cancellation up to two business days prior to the training date. This credit can be applied towards a future CEU training, symposium or post-graduate course up to one year from the issue date.
